St. Lawrence County has a long history of agriculture. Today dairying remains a mainstay and includes several dozen organic producers. In recent decades three Amish settlements have revitalized many smaller traditional farms, maintaining the region's rural character. For those interested in small farms and local food, agricultural land is affordable and development pressures are minimal.
St. Lawrence County is approximately 2800 square miles, with numerous rivers, small lakes and ponds. Besides nearly 400,000 acres of agricultural land, there are thousands of acres of forests. Fifteen percent of households heat with wood. There are five villages of several thousand residents each. No one community serves as an economic and cultural center.
